Interviewer: Hi Steve, it’s an honor to talk to you, even if it’s in an imaginary setting. Since you left us in 2011, technology has made tremendous strides, especially with generative artificial intelligence. What do you think of these developments?
Steve Jobs: Hi, it’s great to be here in this way. I have to say, the advances in generative AI are truly astounding. Even though I’m not here to see it firsthand, these developments align with much of what I envisioned for the future of technology. The idea that machines can create text, images, and even videos with a level of creativity and precision that mimics human capabilities is something that has always fascinated me. Imagine a machine capable of understanding context, processing complex information, and producing results that not only answer our questions but anticipate our needs. This level of intelligence and creativity is a huge leap forward from what was possible just a decade ago. The potential applications across various sectors are immense: from healthcare, where it can help diagnose and treat diseases, to art and literature, where it can open up new creative possibilities.
Interviewer: Let’s talk about 2022 and 2023. What were the most exciting moments, in your opinion?
Steve Jobs: Well, from what I’ve read and heard, 2022 and 2023 were remarkable years for generative AI. The launch of advanced models like GPT-4 really changed the game. These models can understand and generate text in a way that feels almost human, and that’s a huge leap forward. The ability of these models to understand context, maintain coherence over long passages, and respond to complex questions in an articulate manner is simply incredible. This has opened up new possibilities not just for content creation, but also for human-machine interaction. Imagine a virtual assistant that not only answers your questions but anticipates your needs and provides proactive suggestions. Additionally, the ability to create realistic images and videos has opened new doors in design and entertainment. It’s fantastic to see artists collaborating with AI to create things that were previously unimaginable. I also think about the advancements in healthcare, where AI is being used to analyze vast amounts of data to aid in diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
Interviewer: How do you see generative AI influencing human creativity?
Steve Jobs: I think generative AI is a tremendous boost to human creativity. It’s not about replacing people, but amplifying our capabilities. Writers can overcome writer’s block, musicians can experiment with new sounds, and designers can create incredible projects. It’s a collaboration between human ingenuity and machine power that allows us to do extraordinary things. For example, an author might use an AI model to generate ideas for a plot or to develop characters in ways they hadn’t considered. A musician might use AI to explore new combinations of sounds and rhythms, creating music that is both innovative and deeply personal. This combination of human creativity and computational power will enable us to explore new horizons and achieve levels of artistic expression that were previously unthinkable.
Interviewer: Looking to the future, what do you expect from generative AI?
Steve Jobs: The future is really exciting. I expect AI to become even more integrated into our daily lives, with greater personalization and the ability to adapt to our needs. AIs will be able to understand not just language, but also emotions and intentions, making our interactions even more natural and useful. I envision a world where technology is so seamlessly integrated into our daily lives that we almost don’t notice it’s there. The devices we use every day will be able to anticipate our needs, suggest solutions, and help us make more informed and conscious decisions. And of course, we’ll see these technologies become more embedded in the devices we use every day, making everything easier and more enjoyable. Additionally, I imagine a future where AI not only helps us solve problems but inspires us to see the world in new ways, explore new possibilities, and create things we never thought possible.
Interviewer: Do you have any ideas on how to further evolve technology?
Steve Jobs: Absolutely. I think the key is to make technology even more intuitive and human. Imagine user interfaces that are even simpler and more natural, perhaps with advanced use of augmented and virtual reality. I see a future where our devices not only respond to our commands but anticipate our needs, understanding the context we’re in. For example, think of a virtual assistant that not only answers your questions but helps organize your day, suggests new learning paths based on your interests, and even helps maintain your physical and mental well-being. Additionally, I’d like to see greater integration between different technologies, such as artificial intelligence and biotechnology, to improve people’s health and well-being. Imagine a future where we can use AI to personalize medical treatments, prevent diseases, and enhance the quality of life in ways we can only dream of today.
Interviewer: And what about Apple? How do you see its journey after your passing?
Steve Jobs: Apple has done an extraordinary job. I’m proud to see how the company has continued to innovate and maintain its creative spirit. They’ve carried forward many of the ideas and principles we worked on, and they’ve also explored new directions that are very promising. It’s great to see Apple continue to be a benchmark in the tech world, keeping that passion for design and innovation alive. They’ve continued to push the boundaries of what’s possible, introducing new products and services that improve people’s lives. Their attention to detail, quality, and user experience remains unparalleled. It pleases me to see how they’ve embraced new technologies, like artificial intelligence and augmented reality, and how they continue to innovate in ways that make technology accessible and useful for everyone.
Interviewer: Speaking of the most influential personalities in the tech world today, who do you think resembles you the most in their approach and vision?
Steve Jobs: That’s an interesting question. If I think of someone who combines a bold vision with strong leadership, I’d say Sam Altman. He has an extraordinary ability to see the potential of artificial intelligence and push the boundaries of what’s possible. He’s a bit like me in that he’s always looking for innovations that can truly change the world. He also has something of Bill Gates in terms of organizational ability and strategic vision. Sam is able to see beyond the immediate horizon and imagine how technologies can be used to solve complex problems and improve people’s lives. His leadership at OpenAI and his dedication to finding innovative solutions make him a truly influential figure in today’s tech landscape. All in all, he’s doing an incredible job.
Interviewer: Thank you so much, Steve. It was a pleasure imagining this conversation with you. Your ideas and vision continue to inspire us every day.
Steve Jobs: Thank you. It was fun. Keep innovating and dreaming big. The future is in our hands.
